The Susan's first solo flightThis has nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with software…

The Susan and I have been watching a lot of Battlestar Galactica (BsG) season three recently. She bought it for my birthday and we’ve been working our way through it. In BsG the pilots call each other by their callsigns; Boomer, Starbuck, Apollo… yadda yadda yadda. That’s all fine and dandy, Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise had the same thing going on in Top Gun.

But wait…. I could not help but notice that the BsG pilots and romantically involved they still call each other by their callsigns. Turns out Top Gun had the same thing going on even if you discount the homo erotic subtext I caught Meg Ryan’s character, Carole, referring to her husband as Goose, did he actually have a real name? Do real pilots actually get this?

Now… It just so happens that The Susan is learning to fly, so she qualifies. So I thought I’d try and start referring to her by the oh so catchy moniker of november-six-niner-four-tango-whiskey and see if it sticks. I’m sure she’ll love it, it’s catchy and has a romantic air to it.

I’ll let you know how I get on…

  2. I suspect she’ll start referring to you as Alpha Sierra Sierra Hotel Oscar Lima Echo.
